A ‘concerted campaign of misinformation’

The committee report pointed to what it described as a ‘concerted effort to scare people’ when it comes to moving over to electric vehicles. This includes stories about electric cars catching fire, drivers being stranded by electric vehicles with limited range, and exaggerations about the purchase and running costs of electric cars.

The committee says that the Government needs to do more to build consumer confidence. The committee chair, Baroness Parminter, said that it was vital that the Government provides reliable, accurate information to the public, in order to counter the falsehoods that people are constantly being fed.

Although the UK passed the milestone of 1 million electric car sales in January, sales are slowing down. The committee feels that the misinformation being circulated is at least partly to blame for this. Electric car sales fell from an average 16.5% of all sales in 2023, to just 14.7% in the first month of 2024.
