The annual climate talks, COP 28, have kicked off in Dubai, and they’ve certainly got off to a positive start. The talks, which will run through to 12th December, have already announced significant pledges of financial help for countries facing problems due to climate change.

The so-called ‘loss and damage’ fund will provide aid for countries who are suffering climate related disasters, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events. The UK is contributing $76m, Germany $100m, the UAE $100m and the US $17.5m. This funding is in addition to the $100bn per year that developed nations already provide to help developing countries reduce emissions and prepare for climate change.

What is COP28?

COP28 is the 28th annual meeting, or Conference of the Parties (that is the parties who signed up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – also known as the Rio Convention – in 1992).

The aim of the summit is to bring together the world’s governments to agree on ways to limit the climate change, and to find ways of dealing with the impact of these changes both now and in the future. It was at COP21 in Paris in 2015, that the parties agreed to try to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°C. Much of the focus of the COP conferences since then has been on how to achieve this goal.

Over 200 governments will participate in the COP28 talks, including the UK. Both the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and His Majesty King Charles III will be in attendance, along with representatives from other governments, environmental groups and businesses, along with climate experts from the scientific community.

What do they hope to achieve at COP28?

One of the aims of COP28 is to make the talks the most inclusive yet, with richer countries pledging to help poorer nations to fund climate action. The talks will also focus on fast-tracking the move to cleaner energy sources, in an effort to cut greenhouse gasses, such as CO2.
